Add a new head coach at the champions, a mid-season shutdown of several weeks, and a promoted club or two with genuine ambition, and this looks like the most unpredictable Saudi season in years.
Al Nassr ended a long wait last season, sealing the league title in late June and finally putting silverware alongside the goal totals. The manager who delivered it has since departed, and Ange Postecoglou has arrived on a two-year deal to oversee the defence of the trophy.
Postecoglou’s football is direct, high-line and possession-heavy, which is a meaningful stylistic shift for this squad. It also demands a specific type of midfielder, and that is precisely where Al Nassr have a gap. The departure of Marcelo Brozovic at the expiry of his contract removed the player who set the team’s tempo, and for much of the summer the club was unable to replace him.
The reason was financial. Al Nassr spent weeks unable to register new players while resolving outstanding obligations, an unusual position for a reigning champion. They have since obtained their financial compliance certificate and their continental club licence, which clears the largest regulatory obstacle, though the exact scope of any spending limits remains a live question. A move for Portuguese midfielder Samu Costa has been the recurring name attached to their search.
Cristiano Ronaldo remains the league’s defining figure, and last season he was still its most consistent goalscorer in absolute terms even without finishing top of the charts — a rare season in which two other forwards outscored him. He hinted publicly at an exit after the title was won, then signed a new contract a month later, having won a major international trophy with Portugal in between.
His frustration during that period was reportedly about recruitment rather than football, which makes the club’s transfer situation more than an administrative footnote. Ronaldo’s output has not declined in any way that shows up in the numbers, but a forward of any age needs supply, and supply is a function of the midfield Al Nassr have not yet rebuilt. That is a shutdown of roughly six weeks in the middle of a domestic campaign.
The practical effects are significant. Clubs with large international contingents will lose players to national teams rather than getting a rest period. Form built through the autumn will not carry into February in any meaningful way. And the second half of the season becomes an unusually compressed run of fixtures for clubs still involved in continental competition and the domestic cup.
Squad depth, in other words, matters more this season than last. Which returns the conversation to who has been able to buy this summer and who has not.
Three factors will settle it. First, whether Al Nassr complete their midfield rebuild before the registration deadline in early September — a champion carrying an unresolved structural gap into a long season is a champion that gets caught.
